Increasing Training Capacity with Mobile Sports Lighting in the City of Bern, Switzerland

As part of its 2024 Grass Sports Strategy, the City of Bern identified a need to increase the capacity of its existing grass sports pitches as efficiently and effectively as possible.

The aim was to create more opportunities for children and young people to participate in grass sports, meet growing demand for girls’ and women’s football, and support the continued development of local sports clubs.

With several football pitches in the city having no permanent floodlighting, the Sports Department identified mobile lighting as a way of extending the usable training hours of these facilities without installing permanent lighting infrastructure.

Following research into available solutions, the City of Bern evaluated the Quad Pod K65 alongside other products, comparing factors including light output and distribution, stability in windy conditions, mobility and purchase price.

After a demonstration of the Quad Pod K65, the Sports Department decided to run a pilot project using six lighting towers on a 40 x 62 metre football pitch.

Around 100 additional evenings of training capacity

During the pilot, which ran from March to May 2026, the six Quad Pod K65 towers enabled the pitch to be used for training on five weekday evenings until 10pm.

The lighting is used from March to May and September to November, allowing two additional training sessions to take place each evening and increasing the available capacity by around 100 weekday evenings over approximately five months.

A professional lighting measurement carried out during the pilot confirmed good lighting levels across the pitch, while the clubs using the facility have also provided positive feedback on the quality of the lighting.

A flexible solution for sports facilities

The mobility of the Quad Pod K65 has proved particularly useful. The towers can be repositioned or transported to another location with little effort, giving the Sports Department greater flexibility in how and where the lighting is used.

Operation before and after training has also proved straightforward.

Based on the results of the pilot project, the City of Bern Sports Department would recommend the Quad Pod K65 as a training lighting solution.

"At the demonstration, all participants were very impressed by the quality of the light distribution across the pitch, and the excellent mobility of the lighting towers was another feature that stood out.

The uniform illumination of the pitch and the low levels of light spill beyond the playing area have been very impressive. The towers are also straightforward to operate – simply roll them to the edge of the pitch, set them up, connect them to the power supply and start training.

Based on our experience, we can confidently recommend the Quad Pod K65 for use as training lighting."
